Yesterday I moved house, leaving the place
that I had lived for ten months.
An old housemate drove me off, with my luggage
in the car boot bumbling all the way
to the new rented room
in the attic of my new home.
We said our farewell at the door
of the new dwelling which I will learn to know.
So, I locked it behind, trod the winding stairs,
up to my attic room: cold, empty, and foreign.
The old memory suddenly came to strike,
flung me out the room, down the stairs,
out to the door again,
I wanted to see, I wanted to see,
a familiar face again, old and familiar once more!
But all is gone, gone with the car that I came by.
Only an emptiness biting the dark, cold night.
I see no more, I see no more,
the old familiar faces, the old familiar faces.
The wind howling, haunting
like a ghost.
